NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL (INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETETION)

CLIENT : Ministry of Defence, New Delhi
PROJECT VALUE : 100 Crores
LOCATION : Princess Park INDIA Gate, Rajpath New Delhi

VISION
The proposed War Memorial to pay tribute to the heroes of the Indian Army should reflect a sense of pride and respect through form and function in a historically sensitive area. The main idea of a timeless memorial is centered on the concept of a void— a space around which visitors circulate and which symbolises the ultimate sacrifice made. The ‘void’ represents lives lost: a void of painful memory and eternal hope.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES
Public realm and urban environment are the drivers of the proposed design. The significant views and the axial relationship of the old and the new built is to be maintained, legibility and permeability of the space has to be improved. The underground connection to the museum should be an experience of large open and inclosed spaces. The character of the Rajpath area has to be maintained and an impressive new sustainable concept should bind the design together.

Maharishi Vastu Architecture (MVA) is a set of architectural and planning principles assembled by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi based on Sthapatya Vedas . The principles of MVA assert a connection between human health and building materials, orientation to the movements of the sun and spatial relationships . MVA has strict rules governing the orientation and proportions of a building . Following are the principles used in designing and planning of the Maharishi projects : ORIENTATION - All roads and blocks are aligned with the cardinal directions (based on true, geographic north) and facing east, the direction of the life - giving sun, the strongest influence of natural law on earth . PLACEMENT - The site selection for the buildings consider the influence of the slope of the site, position of bodies of water, mountains, etc . - Windows and skylights are also used to allow as much natural sunlight as possible to enter the building . - Maharishi Vedic buildings have Brahmasthans so that every citizen is connected with the wholeness of Cosmic life( Brahmasthan is a silent core of intelligence, and the activity of the structure is arranged around this core) . FEATURES - The Kalash, a Vedic form installed on the roof of every block, is a signature of Maharishi Vedic architecture . Meaning a vessel in Sanskrit, the Kalash enlivens the connection of the building with the cosmos . - Natural building materials and systems are used . PROPORTION - The length, width and elevation of the building are calculated using the ancient Vedic mathematical cosmic formulas and requires a level of construction precision to one - eighth of an inch, thus connecting individual life with Cosmic Life .
